BARNES TABBED AS 2022 EWFC WOMAN OF THE YEAR
2022 APRIL 18 (HOBOKEN, NJ): Eastern Women’s Fencing Conference commissioner Damion Jones has announced the choice of Stevens Institute of Technology dual track senior and graduate student Kiera Barnes as the recipient of the league’s 15th annual Woman of the Year Award. This prize – bestowed annually upon the fencer who best combines the triple standards of success in athletics, excellence in academics, and participation in extracurricular activities – was decided through a postseason vote by the EWFC’s ten head coaches.
A Quantitative Finance major, Finance & Economics minor, and Financial Engineering graduate degree candidate from South Jordan, Utah, Barnes wrapped up her career as a saber competitor with a memorable 2021-22 campaign. The team captain for the Ducks earned EWFC First Team All-Conference honors for the second time after previously doing so two years ago. The 2019 Denise O’Connor Saber Fencer of the Year also helped Stevens earn EWFC Top Saber Squad honors this winter. Barnes was a three-time qualifier for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals where she placed 15th in 2022, 26th in 2020, and 25th 2019. She also surpassed 200 wins in just three years and set the school record for most victories in a season.
Barnes has excelled academically at Stevens by earning spots on the President’s List and Dean’s List every semester, receiving a Presidential Scholarship, being named a Pinnacle Scholar, and attaining recognition as a USFCA All-Academic & Scholar of Distinction Team Member. Her extracurricular activities include serving as Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Secretary, Team Diversity & Inclusion Representative, Top of the V Leadership Academy Representative, Pinnacle Planning Committee Scholar Alumni Coordinator, Gear & Triangle Honor Society Member, Habitat for Humanity Member, Stevens Women in Business Member, and Hoboken High School Volunteer Tutor, in addition to starting an independent business as a Dog Walker & Pet Sitter.
Nine student-athletes garnering EWFC Woman of the Year honorable mention accolades are Hunter College junior Yiqi Deng (Epee / Biochemistry), Wellesley College senior Yasemin Ersen (Saber / Neuroscience), Haverford College senior Golda Glasser (Foil / Political Science & Mathematics), Johns Hopkins University senior Miya Herman (Foil / Cognitive Science), Yeshiva University senior Ruth Lando (Foil & Epee / Psychology), Drew University junior Sophia McGee (Epee / Marketing), Vassar College senior Emilie Rosie Parker (Epee / Political Science & Hispanic Studies), City College of New York senior Katherine Scardino (Epee / Psychology), and Denison University junior Tessy Udoh (Saber / Computer Science).

VASSAR TO STAGE 2022 EWFC CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2022 EWFC Dual Meet & Individual Championships are scheduled for Sunday, February 20, 2022, at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. This will mark the second occasion for the Brewers to host this event, after previously doing so for the first time in 2017, but not being able to stage the 2021 edition due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic upon intercollegiate athletics.
HUMPHREY NAMED AS 2021 EWFC WOMAN OF THE YEAR
2021 JUNE 18 (HOBOKEN, NJ): Eastern Women’s Fencing Conference commissioner Damion Jones has announced the posthumous affirmation of late Hunter College student Corin Humphrey as the winner of the league's 14th annual Woman of the Year Award. This prize – implemented to recognize the fencer who best combines the triple standards of success in athletics, excellence in academics, and participation in extracurricular activities – was decided through a postseason vote by eight EWFC head coaches.
While the EWFC did not conduct a traditional season due to the coronavirus pandemic, the league decided to pick a Woman of the Year overall winner and honorable mention team to salute student-athletes who continued to pursue their degrees during the 2020-21 academic year. Humphrey, a Neuroendocrinology major from Brooklyn, New York, was expected to step into a leadership role as an epee competitor for the Hawks if a traditional season had been held, but took her life last October amid mental health battles and internal struggles exacerbated by the worst public health crisis in a century.
Humphrey’s achievements in the classroom included the receipt of a CUNY Memorial Scholarship for students in the Social Work, Human Services, Health, or Education disciplines in Fall 2019; and a Hunter College McNulty Honors Scholarship for women pursuing leadership roles in Science and Math in Spring 2020; as well as selection to the National Institute of Health’s Blueprint Initiative ENDURE, which is aimed at raising interest and creating opportunities for individuals typically underrepresented in the field of Neuroscience in Summer 2020. Her extracurricular activities centered around researching how hormone levels and therapies affect circuits involved in triggering epileptic seizures at the Mount Sinai Icahn School of Medicine’s Shuman Laboratory.
Seven student-athletes garnering EWFC Woman of the Year honorable mention recognition are Wellesley College senior Julia Calventus Coveney (Epee / English & French), Vassar College senior Nicoletta Dinelli (Saber / Environmental Science), Drew University junior Emily Jones (Saber / English), Johns Hopkins University senior Shaina Morris (Epee / Environmental Science & Earth and Planetary Sciences), Stevens Institute of Technology graduate student Teny Odaimi (Epee / BS in Biomedical Engineering & MA in Management), Yeshiva University senior Adina Passy (Epee / Biology), and City College of New York senior April Vargas (Foil / Economics & Psychology).

MCDONALD OF JHU FENCES AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
2021 MAY 09 (STATE COLLEGE, PA): Alexandra McDonald of Johns Hopkins University recently closed collegiate fencing’s coronavirus-altered campaign by placing 19th in the foil tournament at the season-ending NCAA National Championships. The round robin format matched up the country’s top 24 competitors in each of the sport’s three weapons on the last weekend of March at Penn State University.
While the Eastern Women’s Fencing Conference did not conduct a traditional campaign due to the coronavirus pandemic, several league members competed against limited schedules, including JHU. With the worst public health crisis in a century preventing the NCAA Regionals from being held, national qualifiers were selected based on individual records, and McDonald earned a spot by winning 13 of her 15 bouts across five dual meets.
McDonald is the third EWFC representative to advance to the grandest stage in the nation, after Emma Buckingham of Haverford College initially accomplished the feat in 2008 and finished 15th in epee, followed by Stella Shifrin of Hunter qualifying in 2011 and ranking 23rd in saber. She is also the first fencer for the Blue Jays to reach the culminating event of the NCAA season in exactly two decades.
At the conclusion of the NCAA National Championships, the top eight placewinners in each weapon are named All-Americans. Two dozen men and two dozen women qualify per category, usually based on performances at their respective regional events, but that process was adjusted this season due to the unique circumstances. Stefani Deschner of Notre Dame University captured top honors in the women’s foil category.

EWFC MOVES TO 10 WITH DENISON & WELLESLEY
2021 APRIL 23 (HOBOKEN, NJ): The Eastern Women’s Fencing Conference is pleased to welcome Denison University as the league’s newest member. Located in Granville, Ohio, Denison’s addition, coupled with the earlier membership announcement of Wellesley College, will expand the EWFC to a record-setting 10 programs going into the 2021-22 academic year.
Denison is the first Eastern Women’s Fencing Conference member based in the Midwest, while Wellesley from suburban Boston is the first in New England. The EWFC was initially conceived as a New York City area league ahead of the 2000-01 season before expanding to encompass eight programs representing four Mid-Atlantic states over the ensuing two decades.
"I know the quality of Denison athletics from competing and cheering against the Big Red when I was a student-athlete at North Coast Athletic Conference rival Allegheny College," said EWFC commissioner Damion Jones. "I have no doubt they and the Wellesley Blue will both bring high standards to this league as we continue to exemplify the NCAA Division III spirit."
Like many athletic competitions across the NCAA landscape, the Eastern Women’s Fencing Conference was not able to stage its annual Dual Meet & Individual Championships during the 2020-21 academic year, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. But the league is looking forward to returning with its biggest-ever contingent of members in the 2021-22 season.
"I’m happy to add two strong Division III programs to the EWFC," stated Vassar College head coach Bruce Gillman. "Wellesley has become a strong program over the last few years, and Denison is an up-and-coming program, leading the way for many other club programs to work their way up to NCAA Division III. The future is bright for the EWFC and NCAA Fencing."
The EWFC crowns its team champion through a single-day round robin dual meet, which is followed by individual tournaments to decide Fencer of the Year and All-Conference honors in the foil, epee, and saber categories. Team plaques are also offered in the three weapons classifications, along with a Team Spirit award, and a Woman of the Year selection.
"I especially want to thank Stevens Institute of Technology head coach Linda Vollkommer-Lynch for spearheading the efforts to bring Denison and Wellesley into the EWFC," added Jones. "As the league’s founder, she has always advocated strongly for us to fully embody the NCAA Division III model, and that includes extending our competitive umbrella as far as possible."
The EWFC was founded in 2000-01 and includes charter members City College of New York, Hunter College, Stevens Institute of Technology, and Yeshiva University. Former program Bard College was replaced by Drew University in 2002-03, while Haverford College joined in 2005-06, Johns Hopkins University entered in 2007-08, and Vassar College onboarded in 2014-15.
Johns Hopkins has won the last two team titles and eight since the 2009-10 campaign, with Stevens claiming the other three in that span and five overall. Drew has lifted the trophy six times and Haverford once. The next EWFC Dual Meet & Individual Championships are slated to take place on February 20, 2022 at Vassar, which is located in Poughkeepsie, New York.

EWFC ADDS WELLESLEY COLLEGE AS NINTH MEMBER
2021 MARCH 01 (HOBOKEN, NJ): The Eastern Women’s Fencing Conference is proud to announce the addition of Wellesley College as the league’s ninth member. Located in Wellesley, Massachusetts, 12 miles west of Boston, Wellesley is one of the nation’s leading liberal arts colleges for women. The Blue will give one of the NCAA’s most stable single-sport leagues its first team in the New England region while further strengthening its high level of competition.
"Wellesley has a well-earned reputation as one of the nation’s finest colleges and that is also reflected in the many achievements of the Blue athletic program," said EWFC commissioner Damion Jones. "The Eastern Women’s Fencing Conference members that regularly participate in the NCAA Northeast Regionals have witnessed very closely Wellesley’s development on the strips over the years, and along with our teams that annually take part in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals, can now look forward to competing against the Blue on a completely new level as league opponents."
After calling off this winter’s EWFC Championships due to the coronavirus pandemic, the conference looks forward to competing with nine programs in 2021-22. ANNOUNCEMENT ON 2021 EWFC CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2021 EWFC Dual Meet & Individual Championships will NOT be held on Sunday, February 14, at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. While the NCAA and individual schools are sponsoring a reformatted fencing season in the spring of 2021, the EWFC plans to return in the 2021-22 academic year with the next edition of our championships.
CHEN WRAPS UP AS 2020 EWFC WOMAN OF THE YEAR
2020 MAY 20 (HOBOKEN, NJ): Eastern Women’s Fencing Conference commissioner Damion Jones has announced the selection of Johns Hopkins University senior Erin Chen as the winner of the league’s 13th annual Woman of the Year Award. This prize – implemented to recognize the fencer who best combines the triple standards of success in athletics, excellence in academics, and participation in extracurricular activities – was decided through a postseason vote by the EWFC’s eight head coaches.
A Molecular & Cellular Biology major and Computer Science minor from Lumberton, New Jersey, Chen closed out her four seasons as a standout saber competitor during an exemplary 2019-20 campaign. The team captain for the Blue Jays became the second three-time EWFC Denise O’Connor Fencer of the Year in any weapon while also claiming All-Conference honors for the fourth time in a row. She also wrapped up each of her winters on the strips with Top 20 finishes at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals, to go along with a quartet of Top 5 placements at the NIWFA Championships including a title victory as a freshman in 2016-17, and leaves JHU as the program’s record holder for most wins in a season and career.
Chen’s academic achievements are highlighted by placement on the Dean’s List, membership in the Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Professional Health Honor Society, and selection to the Google Cloud Academic All-District Team, as well as Research Assistantships at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s Watanabe Laboratory and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Genetics Department’s 22Q & You Clinic. Her extracurricular activities include serving as a Team Leader and Health Resource Counselor for the Charm City Care Connection, Head of the Family Thread Mentoring Program, Peer Leader to First-Year Students, and Home Care Provider for a local resident with Multiple Sclerosis, while also volunteering with JHU’s Bayview Medical Center Emergency Department Transitional Program and spending time as the Special Olympics Club’s Vice President.
Seven student-athletes earning EWFC Woman of the Year honorable mention accolades are City College of New York senior Lia Castillo (Saber / International Studies & History), Vassar College junior Nicoletta Dinelli (Saber / Environmental Studies), Hunter College senior Mernayaser Eldesouki (Foil / Computer Science), Drew University junior Emily Huber (Saber / Biology), Haverford College junior Hanna Kopits (Foil / Environmental Studies), Yeshiva University senior Batsheva Lasky (Epee / Nursing), and Stevens Institute of Technology senior Allison Urban-Spillane (Foil / Visual Arts & Technology).

The 2020 EWFC Dual Meet & Individual Championships are scheduled for Sunday, February 16, 2020, at Hunter College in New York, New York. This showcase will mark the league’s 20th season of competition with the festivities at the site of the EWFC’s maiden round robin team event in 2003.
NEUHEARDT AWARDED 2019 EWFC WOMAN OF THE YEAR
2019 APRIL 22 (HOBOKEN, NJ): Eastern Women’s Fencing Conference commissioner Damion Jones has announced the choice of Haverford College senior Anna Neuheardt as the winner of the league’s 12th annual Woman of the Year Award. This prize – implemented to recognize the fencer who best combines the triple standards of success in athletics, excellence in academics, and participation in extracurricular activities – was decided through a postseason vote by the EWFC's eight head coaches.
An Economics major from Littleton, Colorado, Neuheardt wrapped up her four seasons as a saber competitor during the 2018-19 season. The team captain for the Fords missed much of her final campaign due to injuries but was a three-time EWFC Second Team All-Conference honoree in 2018, 2017, and 2016. She also closed out each of those years by placing in the Top 30 at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals and finished in the Top 10 at the NIWFA Championships on all three occasions as well.
Neuheardt’s achievements in the classroom resulted in her selection to both the NIWFA All-Academic Team and the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team. Her extracurricular activities include participation in Haverford’s Strength & Conditioning Committee, Residential Life Committee, and First-Year Orientation Committee, while also serving as a Resident Advisor and an Archivist in the College Library’s Quaker & Special Collections Section.
Seven student-athletes earning EWFC Woman of the Year honorable mention nods are Johns Hopkins University junior Erin Chen (Saber / Molecular & Cellular Biology), Stevens Institute of Technology senior Amanda Choy (Epee / Business & Technology - Marketing & Information Systems), Drew University senior Caitlin Kotz (Foil / Biochemistry & Molecular Biology), Yeshiva University junior Batsheva Lasky (Epee / Nursing), City College of New York senior Nemesys Perez (Foil / Biology), Hunter College senior Michelle Rangel (Saber / Behavioral Neuroscience), and Vassar College senior Mirit Rutishauser (Foil / Environmental Studies).

JHU TO HOST 2018 EWFC CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2018 EWFC Dual Meet & Individual Championships are scheduled for Sunday, February 18, 2018, at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. This will be the second occasion for the defending champion Blue Jays to host this event, after previously doing so for the first time in 2013.
BERDICHEVSKY NAMED WOMAN OF THE YEAR
2016 APRIL 28 (HOBOKEN, NJ): Eastern Women's Fencing Conference commissioner Damion Jones has announced the selection of Hunter College senior Allison Berdichevsky as the winner of the league's ninth Woman of the Year Award. This prize -- implemented to annually recognize the fencer who best combines the triple standards of success in athletics, excellence in academics, and participation in extracurricular activities -- was decided through a postseason vote by the EWFC's eight head coaches.
Berdichevsky, a Russian Translation major from Pelham, NY, wrapped up her career as a foil competitor with an outstanding 2016 campaign. The squad leader for the Hawks was named an EWFC First Team All-Star for the second straight year after posting a 14-2 record at the EWFC Dual Meet Championship and advancing to the title match at the conference's individual tournament. She also finished third at the NIWFA Championships and closed out the season with a 16th place showing at the NCAA Northeast Regionals.
Berdichevsky's senior success followed a junior campaign in which she took third in the league individually before winning the NIWFA Championship and placing 12th at the NCAA Northeast Regionals. Coupled with her victory at the Christmas Invitational, she became the first fencer to sweep both NIWFA events in the same season in 45 years. Berdichevsky ended up in the Top 16 at the Northeast Regionals three times as well. She has also been a regular presence on the Dean's List and earned a Hunter Academic Gold Award.
Seven additional student-athletes who have been named to this season's EWFC Woman of the Year honorable mention panel are City College of New York senior Klarissa Armada (Foil / Digital Design), Stevens Institute of Technology senior Caroleen Chen (Foil / Computer Engineering), Yeshiva University sophomore Rebecca Kerzner (Epee / Graphic Design), Vassar College senior Rachel Messbauer (Epee / Drama), Haverford College senior Juliana Petersen (Epee / Psychology), Drew University senior Sarah Silvestri (Saber / Biology & Music), and Johns Hopkins University senior Rachel Viqueira (Foil / Public Health).

BATZLI SLOTTED AS EWFC WOMAN OF THE YEAR
2015 APRIL 29 (HOBOKEN, NJ): Eastern Women's Fencing Conference commissioner Damion Jones has announced the selection of Stevens Institute of Technology senior Sienna Batzli as the winner of the league's eighth Woman of the Year award. This prize -- implemented to annually recognize the fencer who best combines the triple standards of success in athletics, excellence in academics, and participation in extracurricular activities -- was decided through a postseason vote by the EWFC's eight head coaches.
Batzli, an Engineering Management major from Maplewood, NJ, wrapped up her four winters as an epee competitor with a solid 2014-15 campaign. The Ducks standout was named an EWFC All-Star after reaching the Quarterfinals of the league's Individual Championship Tournament, compiled a 13-5 record at the EWFC Dual Meet Championship, and finished out her career by notching 25th place at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals.
Batzli's academic honors at Stevens Institute of Technology are highlighted by placement on the Dean's List and acceptance into the L'Oreal Management Development Program, while her extracurricular activities include serving as a Stevens Telethon Supervisor, Coordinator for Women's Programming, and Vice President of Membership Development for Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority, as well as participating in the Stevens Co-Op Program.
Seven additional student-athletes who have been named to this season's EWFC Woman of the Year honorable mention squad are City College of New York junior Klarissa Armada (Foil / Digital Design), Hunter College junior Allison Berdichevsky (Foil / Biology), Drew University freshman Natalia Dashnaw (Saber / Neuroscience), Vassar College senior Megan Lewis (Epee / Astronomy & Physics), Yeshiva University senior Michelle Neiman (Saber / Biology), Haverford College junior Juliana Petersen (Epee / Psychology), and Johns Hopkins University senior Gianna Puzzo (Epee / History of Art).
The Eastern Women's Fencing Conference finished up its 15th season of matches this winter. Charter members City College of New York, Hunter College, Stevens Institute of Technology, and Yeshiva University were joined by Drew University for the 2002-03 championships, Haverford College in 2005-06, Johns Hopkins University as of 2007-08, and Vassar College during the 2014-15 campaign. Stevens captured its third overall dual meet title with an unbeaten 7-0 record in head-to-head competition this past winter.

NIERADKA CHOSEN AS EWFC WOMAN OF THE YEAR
2014 MAY 05 (HOBOKEN, NJ): Eastern Women's Fencing Conference commissioner Damion Jones has announced the selection of Stevens Institute of Technology senior Briana Nieradka as the winner of the league's seventh Woman of the Year award. This prize -- implemented to annually recognize the fencer who best combines the triple standards of excellence in academics, success in athletics, and participation in extracurricular activities -- was decided through a postseason poll of the EWFC's seven head coaches.
Nieradka, an Environmental Engineering major from West Windsor, NJ, culminated her four seasons as an epee competitor with an exemplary 2013-14 campaign. The squad leader for the Ducks garnered EWFC All-Star honors for the fourth consecutive year, accumulated a 15-2 record at the EWFC Dual Meet Championship, placed third at the EWFC Individual Championships, finished third at the NIWFA Championships, and closed out her career by grabbing the 25th spot at the Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals.
Just the sixth epee competitor to claim four EWFC All-Star nods, and the 16th in any of the sport's three weapons over the league's 14 years of history, Nieradka was a First Team choice each winter, earning Fencer of the Year distinction in 2012 and 2013, one of just seven individuals to ever earn that status twice. Her academic merits are highlighted by the President's List and Dean's List. She has also received the Edwin Stevens Scholarship, Edward Bloustein Distinguished Scholarship, and Scholar of Excellence Scholarship.
Six additional student-athletes who have been named to this season's EWFC Woman of the Year honorable mention panel are Yeshiva University senior Gabriela Dobkin (Foil / Biochemistry), Johns Hopkins University senior Jackie Heath (Foil / Chemistry), Drew University sophomore Sarah Silvestri (Saber / Biology), Haverford College senior Sarah Sofia (Epee / Physics & Astronomy), City College of New York senior Grace Tsui (Saber / Biology), and Hunter College senior Monica Yuen (Saber / Emerging Media Studies).
