WANG SELECTED AS 2012 WOMAN OF THE YEAR

JESSICA WANG
MAY 21, 2012 / HOBOKEN, NJ: Eastern Women's Fencing Conference commissioner Damion Jones has announced the choice of City College of New York senior Jessica Wang as the recipient of the league's fifth-ever Woman of the Year award. This honor -- established to annually recognize the fencer who best combines the triple standards of excellence in academics, success in athletics, and participation in extracurricular activities -- was decided by a postseason vote among the seven EWFC head coaches.
Wang, a Civil Engineering major from Bayside, NY, concluded her four-year career as a foil competitor with a noteworthy 2011-12 season. The team captain for the Beavers became just the fourth foilist to earn EWFC All-Star honors in each of her four winters. She compiled a 15-3 record at the EWFC Dual Meet Championship, placed third at the EWFC Individual Championships, finished ninth at the NIWFA Christmas Invitational, and wrapped up her campaign with a 36th place showing at the Northeast Regionals.
In addition to her rare status as a four-time EWFC All-Star in foil, Wang is one of just 14 individuals to accomplish this feat across any of the sport's three weapons over the conference's 12 years of history, and was a First Team pick each year. Off the strips, she holds a scholarship from the Grove School of Engineering and has been a mainstay on the Dean's List. Her extracurricular activities include involvement with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Beaverlympics, Concrete Canoe Club, and Relay For Life.
Six fencers receiving places on the league's EWFC Woman of the Year honorable mention squad are Johns Hopkins University senior Lauren Chinn (Epee / Cellular & Molecular Biology), Drew University junior Emilia Domanowski (Saber / Political Science & French), Haverford College senior Kathryn Feldman (Saber / Biology), Yeshiva University senior Michal Gilboa (Saber / Nursing), Hunter College senior Wendy Mak (Epee / Nursing), and Stevens Institute of Technology senior Krista Sticco (Saber / Business & Technology).
The Eastern Women's Fencing Conference closed out its 12th season of existence this winter. Charter members City College of New York, Hunter College, Stevens Institute of Technology, and Yeshiva University were joined by Drew University for the 2002-03 championships, Haverford College during the 2005-06 season, and Johns Hopkins University as of the 2007-08 campaign. Johns Hopkins University picked up its third consecutive dual meet title by assembling an undefeated 6-0 record in this year's league bouts.
